Facts and Figures
Each section includes key facts and statistics. These are drawn from a number of sources – principally from the government’s own research and publications. These statistics cover England and Wales, unless otherwise stated.

Stories and Quotes
The case studies are drawn from real-life examples, although in some cases the names have been changed.

Rethinking...
Many of the sections include a ‘Rethinking box’, providing some key questions for you to consider. This is not a test and there are not necessarily any right answers. The purpose is to provide the reader with some prompts so that they can join with thousands of other concerned individuals and really start rethinking crime and punishment.
