The Howard League Handbook

The Community Programmes Award is the Howard League for Penal Reform award for the country's most successful community programmes dealing with offenders. The Awards were part of a partnership campaign with the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation and the Howard League for Penal Reform to promote effective community sentences and programmes. The Awards aimed to increased public protection by recognising outstanding community programmes that helped to reduce the seriousness and frequency of re-offending. Well-resourced and well-structured programmes help to bring down the rate of re-offending and repay the damage done by crime.

The Howard League has now compiled the Community Programmes Handbook which identifies and showcases these positive, creative, and effective programmes from around the UK. This handbook has detailed information about more than 20 different schemes: some working with children; others with high-risk offenders; some use restorative justice techniques while others help to develop skills or find employment to help reduce the risk of offending.

This is an essential read for practitioners and students as well those commissioning and designing services.
