The third Sunday in November each year is Prisoners Sunday a chance for the combined faith communities to focus on the plight of prisoners and their families. WHAT? Prisoners Sunday offers the opportunity for groups and individuals to look at the reality of their lives both in custody and in the community. Through focusing that Sunday's services on prisoners and their families, members of churches and other faith communities are encouraged to think about and pray for those in prison. There is also the opportunity for people to give money to support schemes working with these disadvantaged families. WHO? Obviously, the Prisoners Sunday material is aimed at church members, or members of different faith communities. Anyone who has responsibility for putting together a 'Sunday service' can be involved. HOW? Order a "Prisoners Sunday Pack" from The Prison Advice and Care Trust. The pack provides materials for everyone from the youngest toddlers through to youth groups, justice and peace, social concerns, women's and family groups. Talk to your priest, pastor, vicar, whoever is in charge, and get them to focus that Sunday's services on Prisoners and their Families. If he or she is stuck for ideas there will be plenty to help them in the pack. You might also consider inviting the chaplain from your nearest prison to come and talk to a midweek group. Chaplains can be contacted by ringing the prison and asking to be put through to the Chaplaincy department.
